Gallaudet University’s Genetics
Program provides free genetic evaluations for deaf or
hard of people. Clinics are usually held once a
month during the academic year.
Individuals/families interested in
being evaluated must speak with a genetic counselor so
some general information can be collected. You will
be asked to complete a family history questionnaire
to provide genetic counselors with some detailed family history
information. You will also be asked to provide audiological and medical
records for the person who is deaf.
During a clinic evaluation, you will meet with a board certified clinical
geneticist who will do a brief physical examination and review your complete family and medical
history. Following this meeting, you will speak with a
genetic counselor and/or a medical geneticist to discuss
anything the clinical geneticist may have found and what
it means. Sometimes, the geneticist will make
additional
medical recommendations. The genetic counselors are
available to discuss and assist you with these
recommendations as needed.
If you are interested in learning
more about our clinical service or you would like to
schedule an appointment, please contact a genetic
counselor at (202) 651-5258 (V/TTY) or email*our clinical
