are the computer system requirements to participate in
this course? |
This course is open to anyone,
however it is designed to meet the needs of health
care professionals who work in the field of early
hearing detection and intervention (EHDI).
This would include audiologists, speech-language
pathologists, nurses, educators, and EHDI program
directors and state coordinators. Course
participants are expected to participate in online
discussions about strategies for incorporating
genetics into EHDI programs, referral of parents to
genetic services and the potential barriers to
successful utilization of genetic evaluation and
counseling for families.

When is the registration deadline?
What is the cost of the program? |
The deadline for registration for
the course is September 1, 2008. The
course dates are September 15 - November 21, 2008.
We anticipate that the course will be offered again
on a regular basis, once each semester.
Tuition for the program is $370.
There is also a $30 application fee.

Do I have to be logged on at
particular times and days to participate in this
course? |
No. There are no particular
days or times that participants must be logged on
for lectures or discussions. All lectures are
recorded and can be viewed at the time of your
choosing during each week. You can also
complete the activities and post your contribution
to the discussion board at any time during each week
that is convenient for you. The only
requirement is that you keep up with the course
activities from week to week.

are the computer system requirements to participate in

This is an
asynchronous online course.
You will participate in this course
by using the
Gallaudet Blackboard system, a password-protected
web-based course management software platform.
Lectures are recorded using the Apreso system, and in
order to view the lectures, a PC computer and
Internet Explorer version 6.0 or higher is required.
There are no particular days of the
week or times of the day that you have to log on -
we only ask that you keep up with the course
activities on your own time from week to week.

What will be my responsibilities as a
course participant? |
- Purchase your own textbook.
- View the weekly course
lectures.
- Read the required materials
each week, including chapters from the book and
journal articles that will be posted on
Blackboard.
- Perform the required homework
activities on a weekly basis. This will include
exploration of genetics web sites, some pedigree
drawing, participation in online discussions,
analysis of case studies and other short written
assignments.
- There are no particular days
of the week or times of the day that you have to
log on - we only ask that you keep up with the
course activities on your own time from week to
week.

Can I receive continuing education
units? |
Yes, participants can receive 3.7
continuing education units (Introductory Level,
Basic Communication Processes Area) from the
American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the
American Academy of Audiology (AAA).
Participants will be expected to participate in all course
activities in order to get CEUs.
