Short Answer Questions



1. Type out the proper verb form (from the verb in parentheses) needed in the sentences below. TYPE THE ENTIRE SENTENCE AND END WITH A PERIOD. Use ONLY the PRESENT tense.

John (smell) the flower right now.

2. RULE: .When the verbs 'taste, sound, feel, smell, look' mean AN ACTION, they use the 'ing' verb.

Janice (look) at her typewriter.

3. RULE: When the verbs, 'taste, smell, sound, feel, look' mean A DESCRIPTION, they need the simple verb form (no 'ing').

The flower (smell) good this morning.

4. HINT: Most verbs use 'ing' to talk about 'RIGHT NOW' but these verb are an exception when they are DESCRIBING something.

This material (feel) very soft.

5. HINT: Make sure you understand the difference between 'action' and 'description.' Here the dog is ACTING on something (doing something).

The dog (taste) its food.

6. HINT: Here you have a word 'good' that DESCRIBES something (the food).

The food (taste) good to the dog.

7. I (look) at my book this morning.

8. You (taste) your coffee with a strange look on your face.

9. Your coffee (taste) awful you say.

10. The fireman (sound) the fire alarm now.

11. The fire alarm (sound) very loud.

12. RULE: Some verbs almost NEVER use 'ing' to talk about now. They are exceptions to the normal rule. MEMORIZE the following list. They use the simple present tense (no 'ing') to talk about now.

'agree with, to be, believe, know, like, love, miss, need, owe, own, understand ,want' stay in the simple present tense.

John (agree with) me today.

13. REMEMBER: Most verbs use 'ing' to talk about NOW, but these verbs are exceptions--don't let them confuse you.

Mary (want) new clothes today.

14. I (understand) what you mean now.

15. The boy (believe) he sees his mother.

29. REMEMBER: ALL verb use the simple form (no 'ing') when you are talking about 'frequently.'
