1. Combine the sentences using a relative pronoun.
Choose between 'who' or 'which'
For example, 'The boy lost his dog. The dog was a pup.' becomes 'The boy lost his dog which was a pup.'
The man loved his car. The car was new.
The man loved his car (*******) was new. Type the complete sentence. |
2. RULE: Relative clauses give more information about a noun (the name of a person, place or thing). Relative clauses usually begin with one of the following words: WHICH, THAT, WHO, WHOM. We use 'which' and 'that' when we talk about THINGS, and we use 'who' or 'whom' when we talk about people. Relative clause make two sentences into ONE sentence.
John was very fond of his new friend. His friend was from Russia.
John was very fond of his new friend (******) was from Russia.

3. Sometimes we use 'that' when we talk about people. We only use 'that' if the person is not NAMED. Sometimes when the relative clause comes INSIDE the first sentence, we use either 'that' or 'who' or 'whom' to talk about a person.
For example in the two sentences, 'The man was married recently. He had just turned 25.' becomes 'The man that just turned 25 was married recently.'
Notice that the second sentence talks about the subject of the first sentence ('man') and so comes in as close as possible to the word it talks about and INTERRUPTS the first sentence. We could also have used 'WHO' instead of 'THAT.' Try one. Choose among 'who, whom, that'
The boy hid his money. He was very nervous.
The boy (******) was very nervous hid his money. |
4. Try this one--choose only between 'who' and 'which.'
Peter left town yesterday. He was always in trouble.
Peter (****) was always in trouble left town yesterday. |
5. Now try some where you have to decide where to put the relative clause. REMEMBER--put the second sentence ideas as close as possible to the noun that the ideas talk about.
ALSO you need to change the subject of the second sentence into whatever relative pronoun (WHO, WHOM, WHICH, THAT) is needed. Type the whole sentence. Look back at those you already completed if you need hints.
John often reads books. The books are very long.

6. REMEMBER--change the subject in the second sentence to one of the relative pronouns and put the ideas in the second sentence as close as possible to the noun the ideas are about.

| 13. They watched the car. The car ran off the road. |
14. RULE: We use 'who' when we don't have any other subject in the second sentence. We use 'whom' when we still have a subject in the second sentence. For example:
'The girl left him for another man. He loved her.' becomes
The girl whom he loved left him for another man.
Notice that in the second sentence, the word 'HER' talks about 'the girl' and we still have a subject 'HE.' Therefore, we use 'WHOM." And we must remove the object 'her' because we now use 'whom' in place of the word 'her.'
The boy was tired. She was dancing with him. |
15. When we don't have a subject in the second sentence, we use 'who.'
