Do you want to apply for Social Security
Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Income (SSDI)? Have you been informed
(or not informed) that your SSI or SSDI benefits will be cut or reduced? Did
you lose your Social Security card and you need a new one?
If you don't know what to say, this guide will help you.
Basic Information:
Reduced benefits:
There are two ways to handle appeals and requests to the Social Security Administration
(SSA). You can either call the office, or write a formal letter.
- When calling the SSA, you will need to tell them:
- your name;
- your Social Security Number (SSN);
- your date of birth and/or your mother's maiden name;
- that you have received a "Change of Benefits" letter and you
would like to appeal the decision.
- When writing your appeal to SSA, be sure to tell them:
- your name;
- your Social Security Number (SSN);
- your date of birth and/or your mother's maiden name;
- why you think your benefits should not be cut or reduced (if the change
in benefits will affect your ability to buy food or pay essential bills
such as rent or utilities, state this information);
- your request courteously (rude or hostile language will not help you).
Helpful phrases when communicating with SSA:

- I would like to apply for SSI or SSDI. I am ________ (state disability or
age). What do I need to do to apply?
- What is the difference between SSI and SSDI?

to pay for it?
When appealing a change in benefits:
- I disagree with your decision to decrease/ cut my benefits.
- Decreasing/ cutting my benefits will cause undue hardship for me. This is
how it will affect me______________.
- I would like to appeal your decision to reduce/ cut my benefits.
- I would like to meet with a representative or counselor regarding a change
in my benefits.
- Are there any other steps I can take to appeal this decision?
- What do I need to do to show that a change in benefits will affect me?
