Tutoring through Tutorial & Instructional Programs is a free academic support service for Gallaudet students.

3. Tell me about the various services TIP provides.

Tutoring is available on a one-on-one and small group basis for students enrolled in most courses. Click here to find out how to get tutoring services. Walk-in services are provided in various subjects. Click here to find out the schedule for walk-in service. Writing Advice for students working on papers for class or self-improvement is available from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm Mondays-Thursdays and 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on Fridays. Math tutoring is available from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm Mondays-Thursdays and 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on Fridays at MLC (Library) LE 60.

4. What should I expect from tutoring?

A Tutor is not a substitute for your teacher. You are expected to attend class regularly. For tutoring sessions read your textbook and complete as much of your homework as possible. Come to the sessions with questions about your reading assignment or homework that you did not understand. You should bring your textbook, class notes, old test papers, class handouts, etc.

5. How will I know when my tutoring sessions start?

Tutorial & Instructional Programs staff will send you an email (we only use your Gallaudet email address) with your name, the Tutor's name, the name of course, your assigned tutoring days, time, room assignment and the tutoring start date. You are required to come to the TIP lab in SAC 1221 to meet your Tutor and sign in and out for all sessions.

6. Why do we have to sign in?

The Tutorial & Instructional Programs' budget has to be justified by how well our services are used. The sign-in process helps us keep good records of usage of our services. In addition, the sign-in numbers tell us how students most use TIP so that we can make changes and better serve you.

7. Can I just walk-in any time?

Yes, for selected courses, students can get walk-in, one-stop tutoring and advising. Tutorial & Instructional Programs offers a no-interview, no-application, no-waiting walk-in services for these courses during the regular academic year:

  • Accounting
  • Art History
  • Biology
  • Business
  • Computer Science
  • Economics

  • French
  • Government
  • History
  • Math
  • Spanish

Walk-in schedules can be found online at http://depts.gallaudet.edu/TIP/ or at the Office Assistant's desk in SAC 1221.

8. What should I do if I don't like my Tutor?

You should come in and discuss the situation with a TIP supervisor.

9. I need accommodations, what do I do?

Inform the staff during the intake interview that you will need some accommodations and explain the kinds of accommodations needed.

10. Why are Tutors not allowed to help with take-home tests?

In accordance with the Academic Honesty Policy established by Gallaudet University, Tutors/Writing Advisors are not permitted to assist students with tests.

11. Why aren't Writing Advisors allowed to edit or proofread papers?

If a Tutor or Writing Advisor edits or proofreads course work (and makes changes for the student), the student would not be presenting his or her own true work.
